MEDIA RELEASE: 7 September 2016
Jamie's Ministry of Food West Australian mobile kitchen will head to Belmont as part of a three year partnership with Edith Cowan University (ECU) for the delivery of the program to the people of Western Australia. As the fourth stop for the kitchen classroom on wheels, bookings open on 7th September with classes commencing on 3rd November 2016 and running for seven weeks.
An innovative, community based cooking program, based on Jamie's beliefs about cooking and the associated impact on healthy living. The program teaches Jamie's hints, tips and basic home cooking skills in an effort to encourage people to cook from scratch with fresh food which is of particular importance given about one-quarter of all deaths in Australia are the result of diet related disease.
Research shows that only 1 in 10 of Western Australian residents eat the recommended daily serves of fruit and vegetables and 66.6% of adults are overweight or obese.
ECU Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Strategic Partnerships) Professor Cobie Rudd said, "ECU is really pleased with the success of the Ministry of Food program on both ECU's Joondalup and South West campuses. As the initiative rolls-out to the community, the good results to date auger well for building life-long skills for many more West Australians. ECU sees a range of benefits, including prevention of chronic disease through healthier eating as well as fostering social connections and achieving social inclusion that builds individuals' confidence and in turn, strengthens communities."
Jamie's Ministry of Food West Australian Mobile Kitchen is pleased to be hosted by our Founding Partner, The Good Guys while in Belmont and will be located in the carpark at The Good Guys Belmont. The Good Foundation is proud to be running the program from The Good Guys in Belmont as it helps to showcase the great collaboration and positive results achieved from the 5 year partnership.
"As the Founding Partner of Jamie's Ministry of Food Australia, we are also delighted to be the local partner of the Mobile Kitchen while in Belmont in November and December. We're passionate about this initiative, which promotes healthy eating and helps strengthen local communities in Perth and across Western Australia," said The Good Guys Belmont Store Executive Manager, Josh Rimunui.
"Personally, I'm excited that the Mobile Kitchen will be in action on site at The Good Guys in Belmont - my team and I are looking forward to sharing the journey with our course participants, and maybe even picking up a few tips along the way! " said Josh.
Jamie's Ministry of Food Mobile Kitchen will deliver hands-on basic cooking classes for seven weeks led by a team of dedicated Food Trainers. While at in Belmont, Jamie's Ministry of Food will run with the support of ECU students, interns and volunteers.
Jamie's Ministry of Food Australia has been proven to work. A comprehensive evaluation, conducted by Deakin University and University of Melbourne showed that participants who complete the cooking course, gained new cooking skills and food knowledge, were more confident in cooking meals from scratch, purchased and consumed more vegetables and spent less on take away foods.
A fun and engaging program that fosters a sense of community and social connectedness, the program achieves measurable health and wellbeing outcomes for participants by inspiring and empowering them to change in the way they and their families eat, and how they think about food. Cooking is a life skill which should be accessible to all.
